The Urban Agricultural Skills Training Program is a workshop series designed to equip SFU students and community members with the skills to produce, preserve, and prepare their own food. Participants will also engage in discussions of our food systems both locally and globally and gain tools to create change in their own lives and communities.

Waste = food! Composting is an easy and effective way to reduce household waste while producing rich organic fertilizer that can be used in your home or community garden.

This interactive workshop will include what to compost, what not to compost, different kinds of composts and how to get started, different stages of composting, and tips/tricks! Have questions about how to get started or want help troubleshooting? Bring your burning questions and curiosities to this workshop and ask away!

Come by the demonstration between 12-2pm on Wednesday July 21st at the SFU Pocket Farmers Market.

Want to learn how to grow your own food?  Not sure where to start?  Looking for tips on how to grow fabulous fruits, veggies, and herbs in small spaces on a budget? Container gardening is great for folks who live in apartments, rental suites, or don’t have a backyard garden to plant in. This session is sure to inspire you to get growing!

Topics will include: where to get cheap planters (and what size they should be), where to find the best soil for growing food in containers, what to plant and how to care for it, getting the most out of tiny and small spaces, growing food year round, and where to go for help. Participants should bring a willingness to get their hands dirty. Container Gardening Guide and your own plant to take home with you is included!

About the facilitator: Matthew Kemshaw of the Environmental Youth Alliance has worked in the field of Urban Agriculture for several years and has been mentored by some of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected community gardeners. His experience includes working with dozens of schools to strengthen or create their own schoolyard food garden, growing thousands of vegetable seedlings for giveaway in low income neighborhoods of Vancouver, working with Parks Victoria to develop Food Forests on city land, maintaining several community gardens in both Victoria and Vancouver, and designing and implementing horticultural therapy programs with the elderly and people suffering from addictions and/or mental health issues. Matthew has an incredible amount of passion and vision for urban agriculture in Western Canada.

Have you thought of joining a Community Garden?  Interested in exploring and learning more about Community Gardens in your own neighborhood? Join us for this interactive workshop that will introduce folks to a wide range of urban agricultural activities!

Come tour Vancouver’s largest Community Gardens. Wander through extensive community orchards and learn about all the fruit and berries that grow in Vancouver; explore varying methods of annual vegetable production; learn about permaculture food forests; check out working honey bee hives, innovative building designs, greenhouse management techniques, large scale compost facilities and more! Tour will include hands on work in the Cottonwood and/or Strathcona Community Garden.  Bring a willingness to get your hands dirty. Meet in the Youth Garden at the corner of Raymur and Malkin.
